High atop the forested Chandranath Hill, looking out over the rolling green of Sitakunda and the deep blue of the Bay of Bengal, stands one of the holiest sites of the Shakta tradition — the Chattal Shaktipeeth, also known as the Chandranath Bhawani Temple.
Listed among the original 51 Shaktipeeths of the subcontinent, Chattal marks the site where, according to ancient Puranic tradition, the right arm (दक्षिण भुजा) of Devi Sati came to rest after her cosmic body was severed. The Devi is enshrined here as Maa Bhawani — the Mother who Becomes — and her eternal Bhairav, the destroyer-protector of this sacred kshetra, is venerated as Bhairav Chandrasekhar.
Believed to be over a thousand years old, the temple complex stretches across the upper reaches of Chandranath Hill (1,155 ft) and includes ancient Shiva shrines, sacred kunds, prayer halls, and centuries-old stone steps worn smooth by countless devotees.
সীতাকুণ্ডের সবুজ ভূমি ও বঙ্গোপসাগরের গভীর নীলের পটভূমিতে উন্নত চন্দ্রনাথ পর্বতের শীর্ষে অবস্থিত — শাক্ত পরম্পরার অন্যতম পবিত্র তীর্থ চট্টল শক্তিপীঠ, যা চন্দ্রনাথ ভবানী মন্দির নামেও পরিচিত।
উপমহাদেশের মূল ৫১ শক্তিপীঠের অন্যতম, চট্টল সেই স্থান যেখানে পৌরাণিক বিশ্বাস অনুযায়ী দেবী সতীর দক্ষিণ বাহু পতিত হয়েছিল। দেবী এখানে মা ভবানী রূপে এবং তাঁর চিরসঙ্গী ভৈরব চন্দ্রশেখর রূপে পূজিত হন।
এক হাজার বছরেরও বেশি প্রাচীন বলে বিশ্বাসিত এই মন্দির চত্বর চন্দ্রনাথ পর্বতের (১,১৫৫ ফুট) উপরের অংশ জুড়ে বিস্তৃত — যেখানে রয়েছে প্রাচীন শিব মন্দির, পবিত্র কুণ্ড, প্রার্থনা গৃহ এবং অগণিত ভক্তের পদচিহ্নে মসৃণ হয়ে যাওয়া প্রস্তর সিঁড়ি।
